The Painted Gourd
This birdhouse measures approximately 11" tall and 5" wide.
One of our black cats was the model for this gourd, but I painted her as a tuxedo cat.
The deep pink background behind the cat has orange swirls.
It hangs on a length of suede lace.
The gourd has been finished with acrylic gloss varnish for indoor use.

Many years ago, my parents had a lovely and extraordinarily-friendly Siamese named Gershwin. His fur was a beautiful grayish lilac. We doubted that Gershwin was a pure Siamese Lilac Point, though, as he was of a much heavier build than one would expect from a pure Siamese.

Our cat Tickles, on the other hand, refuses to stay put. This is one of the nicest gourds I ever worked with. The shape of the gourd and the curl of the stem couldn't have been dreamed up better.
Any bird would have misgivings about flying into a cat's stomach. However, I remember reading somewhere that birds look for very dark shapes on a tree's surface: a very dark space on a tree is likely to be a hole or crevice that will make a nice habitat. Maybe the dark shape of this gourd isn't so bad...
